About the KGA and GAW

The Kansas Geographic Alliance (KGA) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing geographic literacy among the citizens of Kansas. The KGA is funded by the National Geographic Education Foundation with additional support from Kansas State University, Fort Hays State University, and the State Department of Education.

The mission of the KGA is to promote and support geographic literacy and education throughout Kansas.

Our vision is that the KGA will be the valued and respected source for expertise on geography and the teaching of geography for the citizens of Kansas.

We envision a geographically literate Kansas society that uses their geographic knowledge to support and maintain a healthy environment as a base for strong communities and a vibrant economy, to help the population to make informed decisions as citizens of Kansas, the United States, and the planet.
While the KGA is primarily a professional development organization for educators, membership is open to individuals in government, business, and the general public.

Geography Awareness Week is an "annual public awareness program organized by National Geographic Education Programs (NGEP) [which] encourages citizens young and old to think and learn about the significance of place and how we affect and are affected by it. Each third week of November, students, families and community members focus on the importance of geography by hosting events; using lessons, games, and challenges in the classroom; and often meeting with policymakers and business leaders as part of that year’s activities. Geography Awareness Week is supported by year-long access to materials and resources for teachers, parents, community activists and all geographically minded global citizens."
